Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)

Medium Density Fibreboard is a man-made material which is ideal for the construction of furniture and wall panelling as it is strong and does not warp. It is available in a variety of thicknesses and there is even a flexible variety for making curves. It also exists in a waterproof version for humid environments. It is much stronger than the chipboard that is commonly used for kitchen furniture, and with the proper protection will last for many years.

MDF can be finished with a layer of wood veneer or just about any paint finish. There are some new versions now on the market with a colour other than the usual brown. These can give a modern finish in their natural state, but should be protected with a matt acrylic varnish as they are naturally porous and will show every greasy finger mark without this protection.
